Meet Some of the Gold Coast’s Unique Wildlife During Queensland Week

Gold Coast residents and visitors can celebrate Queensland Week with free entry to a much-loved wildlife park, National Parks Minister Steve Dickson announced today.

Mr Dickson said entry to the David Fleay Wildlife Park at Burleigh would be free from 1 to 10 June, as part of the Newman Government’s range of celebrations across the state.

“We’re opening up our incredible National Park land to all Queenslanders and visitors, and this Queensland Week forms a special part of that plan,” Mr Dickson said.

“This is a time to acknowledge our state’s wonderful heritage and celebrate all that’s great about Queensland, and what better way than by getting to know some of our most unique wildlife a little better.

“David Fleay Wildlife Park encourages community awareness, appreciation and understanding of Queensland’s protected areas and native wildlife, and inspires people to share in their conservation.”

Mr Dickson said the park was home to many native Queensland species, from the unusual tree-kangaroos and cassowaries which live in tropical northern rainforests to the better known platypus, koalas and kangaroos.

“I’d encourage both first time visitors and those who may not have visited the park in some time to take advantage of this opportunity to discover its fantastic wildlife during Queensland Week,” he said.

“Rangers will run an extended list of daily wildlife presentations so visitors can see and learn more about the furry, feathery and scaly creatures which call Queensland home.

“Roving animal encounters will also give people the chance to get a little closer to some of the wildlife.

“So why not pack a lunch and picnic in one of the park’s shaded amenity areas or enjoy food from Platters Café, so the family fun can continue all day.”

David Fleay Wildlife Park is located on West Burleigh Road, West Burleigh and is open from 9am to 5pm each day.
