SHORT+SWEET Theatre Festival, running from 31 October to 12 November 2011 is longer and juicier this year.
In its 3rd successful year in Queensland SHORT+SWEET is now extending a creative arm to the Gold Coast. In 2011 the SHORT+SWEET Theatre Festival Brisbane+Gold Coast will host 30 writers, 20 directors, 12 Independent Theatre Companies and 100 actors at the Judith Wright Centre in Brisbane and the Arts Centre Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise.
Festival Director Sean Dennehy says “this is just the start, we have great creative communities south (Gold Coast), north (Sunshine Coast) and west (Toowoomba) of Brisbane and SHORT+SWEET is the type of Festival to bring them all together in the future”.
The Gold Coast, for the first time, will host 10 plays over 3 days, while Brisbane will host 20 plays and then the Gala Final. At least 3 of the plays in the Gala Final will be from the Gold Coast. At current ticket prices that’s under $3 per play!
Now in its tenth year SHORT+SWEET is the world’s largest 10-minute play festival and this year presented its 1000th new Australian work making it the largest producer of Australian theatre.
Audiences are guaranteed 10 plays a night and no play will last more than 10 minutes or less; with attention spans shrinking this is great news – everyone loves a short night at the theatre! They also get the chance to be part of the judging process.
The SHORT+SWEET franchise (since 2001 – as it started out in the late 90’s as the ‘biggest little play festival’) has expanded throughout Australia in recent years and now includes festivals in Sydney, Canberra, Central NSW, Brisbane, Melbourne, Rockhampton and Newcastle. This year, SHORT+SWEET will also have an international programme with festivals in Singapore, Malaysia, Taipei, Auckland, Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai.
SHORT+SWEET affords budding playwrights the opportunity of seeing their work come to life on stage –emerging actors, directors and local Independent Theatre Companies also have their chance of being seen in a professional environment by industry experts. It’s also about uncovering and developing new writers.
