Visitor Numbers Up, Sales Up, Industry Looking Up!

2012 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show

Sanctuary Cove Boat ShowVisitor numbers in total were up 1.6%, coming in at 37,094 over the four days. But importantly, out in force were genuine buyers.

Organisers of this year’s event are ecstatic with feedback from exhibitors, all of whom state they are very happy and in many cases “blown away” by their results.

Brett Thurley at Pacific Motor Yachts, dealer for Clipper, Jeanneau and Prestige, was happy to report he sold boats at the show. “But I gauge a boat show on response on the Monday. Sometimes people are really keen on the weekend, then pull back the week after. But we have been busy doing sea trails and the leads we have are serious.”

Thurley continued: “We ramped up our effort this year to have the largest presence on the water and launch Jeanneau and Prestige. The response and rewards were beyond our expectations. SCIBS provided the show and the visitors. It was a far greater result than we could have hoped for. I applaud the management of the show for their efforts to generate and invest in media activity to support the show. To me it’s the premiere boat show for Australia.”

John Hogan, CEO at Superior Jetties labelled this year’s event “the best we’ve ever done”.

“We increased our efforts this year: we launched new products and that combined excitement turned in to real sales, not just leads. We do have more than 100 leads, but for us, we signed 14 contracts, including the biggest lift in the Sunstream range that was launched at the show.”

Integrity’s Brett Flanagan is “over the moon” with year’s results. “We sold four boats, all our stock boats, collected money on them, and sold another one yesterday afternoon, which is under construction. And we are in the process of negotiating two more. And we haven’t even been through our list of prospects! It was our best show ever, no doubt about that.”

An exhibitor for 21 years, David Tanner from AMI Group said the sales are already coming in. “It was certainly the best show in five years. The people were very high quality and that’s what exhibitors want. They seemed to be prepared to spend. There was a great local feel about it, wonderful street atmosphere and friendliness.”

Tanner who says he gauges ROI by post-show orders, judged the show as a great one by the orders he received first thing this morning. “That’s unusual, even in the hey-day. To receive two big orders at 8am on the day after the show is exceptional. The fact is, the sales results are there.”

“Dollars don’t lie,” said one veteran exhibitor, thrilled that he had doubled his target for this year’s show, hitting a 24-year record cash and card total.

“You can’t fudge these figures,” said Steven Quan at Dometic/Seabreeze Industries, distributor of Dometic, Crusair, Sealand and Sovereign products and accessories, who have been at every show for 24 years. “We have made more at this show than any other, topping $100,000 in sales during the four days. We are very happy indeed.

From Palm Beach Motor Yachts, Mark Richards stated “We had a fantastic show! I am really happy. A lot of people had been negative about it, but it went well for us. We have two sea trials today and another one tomorrow. We had people from New Zealand and interstate. I love this show!”

Josh Metz, dealership director at Fairline Queensland said the show was “extremely successful” for the UK brand.

“We sold the Fairline Targa 58, the newly delivered model for this show. We are working on another three to four, which is fantastic! For us it was excellent.”

Andy Young from Boating Syndication Australia sold six shares in its Belize motor yacht during the show. “Yes, we had a great show. We exceeded our expectations. We had a good product and the people were great. We have 17 tests this week and we deem this year’s SCIBS an overwhelming success!”

Peter Collins from Arvor Boats said interest in the Weekender was non-stop and the leads were top quality.

“We put a fair effort in to marketing the new model five months prior, and we expected a fair crowd. It felt like there were more people around this year, even on the Friday. And we have many trials booked in for this week and we will be heading back up to Brisbane to conduct these. This is unprecedented from any show. There were heaps of people here from interstate. We are confident we will have good sales.”

Peter Crossley from Marine OEM Supply, representing Arctic Steel and Tides Marine said: “It was fantastic! A much better show than last year. We were in an excellent position in the Superyacht Pavilion. We had people from all over the place approaching us and hundreds of leads. If we can convert one quarter of these enquiries, we will be wrapped.”

Crossley continued: “It was disappointing that some manufacturers and builders didn’t come, but I am sure they will be back next year.”

Melissa Yeomans from Deckhardware was thrilled with the “genuine buyers” at this year’s event. “Our leads are many times better than for the past two years. We had a lot of interest and request for quotes from owner/builders from interstate. That’s the bonus of SCIBS – you get a lot of interstate visitors which we really noticed this year. We are going back to Sydney with 12 quotes, which is awesome. If we get half of those through, I will be very happy.”

Ian Douglas Mooloolaba Yacht Brokers, representing Jeanneau sail said the general feeling from the public was that the show was excellent. “We were happy with all of it. We had a great show. I would have to say a lot stronger than we expected. We are pricing four boats this week and expect to have four contracts by the end of the week. The DS44 was outstanding and everybody was talking about it. We are pleased we went to the trouble of bringing it here.”

Dani Limback, from Chaparral Australia said the show was surprisingly strong, with interest on the bigger boats and wake boats. “We’re really happy. We have excellent leads – and we don’t take any old leads. We have 120 strong leads and a lot of good feedback. We are organising sea trials from now until Sunday and we have a dozen of those so far. We will be coming back next year for sure.”

Riviera Syndication’s John Russell said this year’s show was “much better than last year”.

“We have sold three shares in the 58 Sports Yacht located in Sydney and two in the 58 here. That’s it for the moment, but we had four full books of leads and demonstrations to do. We are confident we are going to better that. It was great to see so many happy people at the boat show enjoying the best of the boating lifestyle.”

Maritimo’s Luke Durman reported a positive show all round. “One of the dealers told us it was the best SCIBS in four years. We were happy with numbers and general enquiries,” he said. “We had new products on show and great feedback on them. It was a good quality crowd, some faces we recognised and some new faces. In terms of sales, we expect over the next two weeks to take at least five or six orders.”

The new Maritimo 58 was one of the busiest boats on show and according to feedback, visitors were impressed. Likewise with the new Mustang 43. “We’ve spent a lot of time on its development, so it was good to hear the positive feedback.”

Powerdive’s Aaron Hawke, from Perth, was thrilled with his company’s ROI. “We had great days every day, selling out of product. You can’t complain about that! It was worth every cent in marketing and getting our brand out there.”

Florian Caroller from Ensign Boat Brokers said the company went “better than expected”.

“We had one sale of the First 40 and many, many good leads for the Sense 43 and enquiries on the Sense 50. The new Oceanic has also generated a lot of interest. We were able to show the brochures and the boat has some of the same attributes of the Sense. We have many quotes and leads to follow up. We are happy. This week will be busy and we will be closing deals.”

Russell Wright at Horizon Motor Yachts Australia is “delighted” with results. “We were extremely happy with the numbers we had on our stand. It surpassed what we had expected. Whilst there were no direct impulse sales we were introduced to many potential buyers and progressed many of our current leads closer to a sale. It was also encouraging that fewer people were commenting on the current difficult economic times.

“Our new release Horizon E54 was a winner and we are confident to get at least 3 orders of this model after demos and we have two clients close on our new Horizon E70.”

Will Sangster, Director of Sales at Mercury Marine commented on the “enquiry from genuine customers” “From our stand point, that’s important – quality over quantity. The people we saw were absolutely genuine and in the market.”

Define Watches’ Peter Petzold exhibited his prestige timepieces in the MarineBusiness-World.com pavilion and said the show was “very good” for both sales and leads. “The promotion with Gold FM worked extremely well for us. We have sold a few watches and most importantly, we have started interest in our brands.”

According to Petzold, feedback from visitors was that they have never seen anything like the range of German watches he had on show and that they were glad to see a broader range of exhibitors. “It certainly was a good show for us.”

Marc Hall from United Motor Yachts admits that they were late to sign up as exhibitors, and that while the Superyacht Pavilion was quiet for them, “the leads were strong”.

“It was really flag waving exercise for us, since we only opened the doors three weeks ago. We were happy with the show and will be back in 2013, with boats on the water doing boat sales.”

Launching its innovative 950, Seawind sales were very strong. “We sold two 950s and one of the new 1000XL2, the first time it has been on display,” said Brent Vaughan. “We also have hundreds of leads. I think we will have at least one sale this week, as well as three or so strong leads in coming weeks. We are very pleased, especially considering the economy. It has been very slow. This is the best sales activity we’ve had all year.”

Mark Elkington from Multihull Solutions referred to SCIBS as “the best multihull show in Australia” and that this year’s event was “excellent for sales and leads”.

“We secured three contracts on boats at the show and are undertaking sea trials and quotes, hoping to get a similar volume of orders. We have plenty to do. We are very happy. It was a very good show for us. Buyers are noticeably showing a lot of signs of being nervous about committing, but they are there.”

Mark Leach from Raymarine said the show had “its vibe back” and commented on the great atmosphere. “But for us, the important thing is quality enquiry and passing leads on to dealers. We think our dealers will be really pleased with this year.”

Damien Weber from Navico was exhibiting with a brand new stand showcasing brands B&G, Simrad and Lowrance. “The results will be seen by our dealers in the next two to three weeks,” he said, “But we think it was a very strong show. There is a great ambience and traffic through the pavilion. Outside on the marinas, we noticed Simrad has about three times as much share as last year. That is the measure for us. Our brands have really gained traction.”

First time exhibitor, Stand Up Surf Co did great sales at the show, said Kath Philp. “We sold seven boards, which we didn’t expect, and got some very big leads for distribution which we haven’t been able to crack to date, which we also hadn’t expected. The show exposed our brand to a whole new market and we got extremely positive feedback. We will absolutely be back next year!”

Clive Raharuhi from Concept Models not only sold out of his show stock of remote-controlled boats, his store nearby was cleared out by visitors on their way home from SCIBS. “We were in the best spot,” he said referring to the new “Adrenaline Area”, where JetLev and Jet Surf demonstrations were held. “We must have sold close to 100 units, from $75 to $800. It was a great show and people were really upbeat.”

Sue Thomson, Boat Show General Manager said “These results are fantastic! It’s pleasing to hear exhibitors had a great show. We worked hard ramping up marketing and promotion this year and it’s very rewarding when exhibitors leave the show with these kinds of results. In these tough times, these results are encouraging. Planning is already underway for the 25th Anniversary show next year.”

Winson Chow, Mulpha Chief Operating Officer said “Mulpha congratulates exhibitors on their success. As we head towards the significant milestone of the 25th Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, 23 to 26 May 2013, we are looking forward to an even stronger event. It is excellent to cap off this year’s show with such positive results.”

Blues Festival boosts Broadbeach once again

Blues on Broadbeach aerial shotThe event named the ‘Best Event & Festival’ at the 2011 Queensland Tourism Awards has achieved another incredible result with the 11th Anniversary being labelled a ‘massive success’.

More than 80,000 people visited Broadbeach over the four event for the 2012 Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival (24-27 May).

The event kicked off on Thursday night (24th May 2012) in the Broadbeach Mall and finished with enormous crowds on Saturday (26th May 2012) and Sunday (27th May 2012).

Although faced with a drizzly day on Friday organisers say the weather did not dampen the spirits of the tens of thousands of local, domestic and international blues fans who turned out.

The sun came out for a perfect Gold Coast weekend and it is estimated that in excess of $40 million was generated for the local area, with attendees from around Australia, and strong visitation from New Zealand highlighted in market research conducted over the weekend.

CEO of Broadbeach Alliance Jan McCormick says it was the combination of hard work, incredible performances from more than 200 artists and the support of the local businesses that made the event so successful.

“We have a great team that work incredibly hard to ensure that this annual event is an amazing experience for those that attend, and this year was no different.”

“In these tough economic times our strategy is to continue to present free events which bring tens of thousands of people into our city.”

“The flow on effect is that without having to pay an entrance fee, people spend more money in our local businesses, this assists the local economy through the slower winter months” said Mrs McCormick

Audiences were treated to a line-up including Mick Jagger’s younger brother Chris and his band Chris Jagger’s Atcha! Diesel, Jon Stevens, Phil Emmanuel, Luke Dickens, Nat Col & the Kings featuring the dynamic duo of Nathan Cavaleri and Col Hutchings – former Screaming Jets drummer and many more. The Festival remains a free event with no ticket or entry fee required.

Blues on Broadbeach crowdAs well as visiting talent, Blues on Broadbeach showcased local stars with Bluesville Station, Blind Lemon, Andrew Baxter & his big band, Mason Rack Band and Mike Beale all astounding audiences over the four days.

Mrs McCormick says that plans are well underway for next year’s festival which is set to be bigger and better in 2013.

“People should look at booking their accommodation sooner rather than later because I can tell you next year is going to be something really special” said Mrs McCormick.

The Broadbeach Alliance team will now turn their focus to preparing for Broadbeach Restaurant Week 13-22 July and the Broadbeach Jazz Festival where Marcia Hines and Vince Jones will headline 19-22 August 2012.

Blues on Broadbeach will be back from the 23rd to the 26th of May 2013.

Biggest Film Festival in 10 year History

gold coast film festivalThe 2012 Gold Coast Film Festival, presented by Australia Fair Shopping Centre has drawn to a close with another year of stellar results. Attendance numbers continued their upwards spike from the last three years with the festival boasting attendance of over 8,000, making it the biggest festival in its 10 year history.

Event highlights this year included the:-

  • Red carpet gala opening and sell out Australian premiere of Australian/Finnish/German coproduction Iron Sky. The film was partially shot on the Gold Coast and after opening night the film went on to sell out the second session and 50% of an encore third session on only 24hours of sales.
  • Near sell out screenings of Joss Wheedon’s The Cabin in the Woods, A Deeper Shade of Blue, The Professional Idiot, Kicking Off the White Shoes and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2.
  • Australian premiere of anime film Bleach the Movie: Hell Verse, and other Bleach focused anime sessions with international festival guests, principle voice actor Masakazu Morita and director Noryiuki Abe.
  • Free secondary schools film seminars day including international special guest speaker, sci-fi author Alan Dean Foster.
  • The 2012 Audience Award for Queensland Showcase films was won by The Professional Idiot. Nick McLean made his directorial debut, delighting audiences with the hilarious comedy. Produced by Kris Maric and Craig Kockinski (Savages Crossing) the movie stars Simon Gray and Robert Reitano.

The major Audience Award prize is full registration to the Professional Certificate of Executive Screen Production from the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre at Victoria University. The course was developed in co-operation with the Screen Producers Association of Australia (SPAA). The prize also includes return airfares from the Gold Coast to Sydney, and six night’s accommodation over the course weekends.

“The audience award was very close this year with only one vote between The Professional Idiot and Kicking Off The White Shoes. This is a testament to how well supported the local films are in the GCFF,” said Festival Director, Casey Marshall Siemer.

Ms Marshall Siemer said one of the biggest highlights of the festival was seeing how much fun the fans had at the Harry Potter screening which was introduced by Supanova guests James and Oliver Phelps.

“Fans came in costume and really got into the spirit of the event by yelling out their favourite lines at the screen, cheering for the characters and having a great time celebrating the Harry Potter culture. We will definitely do another fan screening of this nature in 2013,” she said

“I would certainly feel confident attributing our spike in attendance to the support and interest from Supanova and Supanova fans. It has been my aim from the beginning to encourage people to see this week in April as “QPOW: Queensland Pop Culture Week. A week where people come to the Gold Coast for a week to attend pop culture events like Supanova and the GCFF.”

The GCFF will be back in 2013 running April 18-28 and will again coincide with the Gold Coast Supanova expo, April 20-21, due to its three year cultural partnership between the GCFF and Supanova Pop Culture Industries. This partnership is exclusive to the Gold Coast Film Festival and no other film festival in Australia will be afforded the same alignment. The 2013 film festival program will include Australian premieres, pop culture films, encore event fan screenings, seminars, master classes, a film related pop culture art exhibition, a program of new release anime films and much more.

The GCFF will also host a handful of special event screenings throughout the year and enthusiasts are encouraged to follow the event on Facebook or Twitter or via its newsletter to be notified of when these events happen.

2192 Sleeps Till Opening Ceremony

The Gold Coast today celebrates the first of many milestones on the way to hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games, with exactly six years until the opening ceremony.

Past and present athletes marked the occasion with quiet celebrations at the Southport Aquatics Centre.

Queensland Minister for Tourism and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said the LNP Government is committed to delivering a world-class Games in 2018.

“With six years until the Gold Coast opens its doors to the world, the clock is ticking and there’s a lot of work to do to prepare,” Ms Stuckey said

“This is a great opportunity to showcase Queensland and it will be a great boost for the state’s tourism.

“As the Minister for the Commonwealth Games, I look forward to working closely with Chairman Mark Stockwell and his team to ensure the event sees the Gold Coast, and Queensland, shine as a major tourism, sporting, events and business destination.”

Acting Gold Coast Mayor Daphne McDonald said the Southport Aquatics Centre was just one of many Games venues that would leave a lasting legacy for the city.

“What better place to mark the six year anniversary until the start of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games than at the aquatics centre – which will be the venue for the swimming in 2018,” said Cr McDonald.

“The Games are not just about 10 days of competition and the investment into new and upgraded community facilities such as the aquatics centre, will leave a great legacy for our community.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Chairman Mark Stockwell said it was important to celebrate all Games milestones.

“It would certainly be easy to think that 2018 is a long way off. However, celebrating milestones is not just about marking the time till the opening ceremony, but about recognising the journey we are on and the significant work required that is already underway,” said Mr Stockwell.

“Not only is it another 2192 sleeps until the opening ceremony, but 2018 will also be the 21st Commonwealth Games – so it will not only be a coming of age for the Gold Coast but also the Games.”

Mr Stockwell said he was looking forward to working closely with the new government and Games Minister to deliver a unique and memorable event in 2018.

2011 Games Bid junior ambassador Eve Lutze said in six years she had no idea what she would be doing but certainly intended to be at the Opening Ceremony.

“After my involvement with the bid I would love to be at the Opening Ceremony – maybe I will be competing if I keep up my training but either way I will be there,” she said

Bleach* Surfing the Fringe Festival Injects $1.74 Million Into Gold Coast Economy

The Gold Coast’s first surf culture festival, Bleach* Surfing the Fringe, has been hailed a success by festival organisers.

Bleach Surfing the Fringe logoThe first of its kind for the region, Bleach* Surfing the Fringe highlighted creative pursuits inspired by surf culture with a festival program that spanned fifty five events staged over sixteen consecutive days across ten kilometres of coastline. The festival incorporated contemporary live music performances, pop up art galleries housed in shipping containers, a street party, art projections on iconic landmarks, fashion events and more. Bleach* was bookended by existing major surf events The Breaka Burleigh Pro and the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro.

Economic statistics compiled during Bleach* by Destination Research & Development highlight a total of $1.74 million in visitor expenditure across the duration of the festival, a figure festival organizers hope to build upon further in coming years as the event solidifies its place as a major fixture on the Queensland events calendar.

Close to 30,000 people attended the festival over its sixteen day tenure. Festival Director Louise Bezzina was overwhelmed by the response to Bleach* in its opening year. “The festival has been hailed as a great success by the local community as well as the visitors who attended the Festival. It was extremely well received, and really put the Southern Gold Coast on the cultural map.”

Ms Bezzina stressed the importance of Bleach* to the local community and its impact on creative industries, surfing-related businesses and hospitality venues in the region. “Bleach* strives to provide employment and professional development opportunities for local artists. The Festival showcases the creativity of the Gold Coast and the uniqueness of the area to a national and international audience.”

Festival organisers aim to run Bleach* in a similar format in 2013, but thanks to input from stakeholders and the public have identified areas of improvement to assist future festival growth. “We will consolidate the visual arts and gallery program and look at enhancing the successful event components in 2013. We will also review some of the boutique, pop up style events and look at raising more funding to ensure the festival has a greater impact nationally and internationally. The 2013 Festival will focus on greater artist collaboration between local and interstate artists,” Ms Bezzina said.

Chairman of Connecting Southern Gold Coast, Murray D’Almeida, said “The success of the this innovative initiative exceeded all expectations and the confidence of the Gold Coast City Council in supporting this economic driver and cultural Festival as well as out sponsors and volunteers was vindicated by the outstanding acclaim the event received locally and nationally.”

Festival organisers wish to thank attendees, sponsors, media partners, volunteers, artists and staff for their commitment to ensuring Bleach* enjoyed outstanding success in its opening year.

CSI: The Experience Leaves Surfers Paradise Sunday 22 April

csi experience surfers paradiseA closing date of Sunday 22 April has been confirmed for CSI: The Experience, leaving keen visitors just over 7 weeks to put their detective skills to the test before the exhibition departs Australasia.

The internationally acclaimed & award winning exhibition, presented by Frontier Events and Events Queensland, in association with EMS Exhibits, under a license from CBS Consumer Products has seen a great number of enthusiastic amateur detectives since its opening at Piazza Surfers Paradise on Friday 2nd December 2011 and tickets to all remaining sessions up to the closing date of Sunday 22 April are on sale now.

This includes numerous teaching professionals taking advantage of the special School Group prices and bringing classes to the exhibition to explore the fascinating world of forensic science for themselves.

Students spoke highly of their experience in last months’ Gold Coast Bulletin (31 January 2012):

“THE CSI: The Experience visit was a thrilling exploration of forensic science. You get to choose between three cases where you analyse evidence to try and solve the crime…What I liked was when you were on the computers analysing evidence, they didn’t just give the answers, they made you think.” MAXINE EULER, Year 5, Trinity Lutheran College

“…The CSI experience entertains both young and old alike with interactive crime-solving techniques like autopsy, DNA analysis and toxicology…Whether you’re dealing with a car crashing into a home, a dead body found near a dumpster or bones in a desert, each case gives an insightful look into the world of forensic science…People can learn about DNA, blood, fibres and everything related to the crime and different fields of forensics like biology, chemistry and anthropology.” LACHLAN HORRIGAN, Year 12, Southport State High School and ADAM HORRIGAN, Year 10, Southport State High School

The 1,110 square-metre exhibition is designed for visitors 11 years of age and older and developed in consultation with 175 forensic science experts. Visitors are guided through an interactive forensic detection process that closely parallels the realities of crime scene investigation.

Our detectives have the opportunity to engage in a new form of interactive, experiential learning described by CSI Executive Producer Jerry Bruckheimer as ‘edu-tainment’. The exhibition is a hybrid of entertainment and science where an interactive multimedia environment is to provide educational value with a touch of pop culture appeal.

The ‘new recruits’ are invited to solve cases using scientific principles and techniques such as DNA and firearms analysis, toxicology and more currently employed by forensic detectives today and as seen on multi award winning and long running hit television crime series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, upon which the exhibition is based.

Upon arriving at CSI: The Experience, visitors are assigned one of three meticulously constructed ‘crime scenes’ available and tasked with solving the case by identifying and recording evidence and processing findings in the ‘crime labs’ and ‘autopsy room’ before presenting their findings to department head and popular television personality ‘Gil Grissom’, portrayed on television by actor William Petersen.

This is the exhibition’s first ever visit to Australia, following its triumphs in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

She has never been shy of controversy or confronting difficult issues.
