Tips to getting the most out of Google Places

We all know that nowadays more and more people are using the Internet to find information, products and services. Local search, according to Google, accounts for approximately 75% of this online activity, making it more important than ever to have a presence in local search results.

There are many things you could do to try and rank your business for local searches, including Search Engine Optimisation and Google Adwords, however for those of you who don’t have the budget for an online marketing campaign, we suggest having a Google Places listing – a free (yet valuable) way to get your business listed online.

So what is Google Places?

A Google Places listing are those businesses (with or without a website) that have a pushpin in the Google map and a corresponding result in the “Places for [insert search term] near [insert location]” when you search for a local business using Google (see image below). The map and listing used to appear within the search results with a link to that business’ Google Places listing. Now Google has combined the listing with a result for the business’s website. What this does is make it much easier to get a result on the first page of Google.
Google Places Search Results

How to get started with Google Places

Submit or claim your listing: Go to www.google.com/places/ and start the submission process. If your business is already on Google Places, you can do a search and claim the listing from this area.

Verify your details: Google needs to make sure that your listing is legitimate. There are 3 ways to verify your listing: by phone, postcard or text message. The phone or text method is the fastest way to verify your listing.

Wait for your details to appear: It takes time for Google to start showing your listing in search results, and in many cases it won’t show up on the first page of Google. Of course, there are things you can do to your listing to improve your chances…

Five things you should do:

  1. Listen to Google. Make sure you are following their Quality Guidelines to the T otherwise your listing may be declined or take much longer to be displayed.
  2. Be accurate. Fill out your Places listing as accurately as possible – make sure your details exactly reflect your business in the offline world or this may cause your listing to be declined.
  3. Do more than the bare minimum. The more complete your listing is, the more likely it will be displayed higher within Google search results. Include your hours of operation, select appropriate categories, payment options, upload images (you can have up to 10 including your logo), videos and any extra information in the ‘Additional Details’ section.
  4. Encourage customer reviews. While it’s not always the case, listings with a greater number of positive reviews will typically appear above others that don’t. We all know that those who didn’t have a positive experience will usually want to tell the world, but those who had a good experience with a company rarely let them know about it. Try and counter this by reminding customers to write a review – include a small message on your invoice, emails or website, for example.
  5. Select a Service Area. Companies that don’t want to show their physical address or who run a mobile business can also enjoy the benefits of a Google Places listing – when you’re submitting your details, select ‘Yes, this business serves customers at their locations’, then list your services areas by region or postcode. You can even choose to not show your business address on your listing.

Oak Tree Retirement Village Goodna Places Page

Some things you shouldn’t do…

  • Don’t keyword stuff. If you include marketing jargon or lingo where your business name is, your listing will be denied. If you stuff your description or additional details full of keywords, your listing will be denied. Write a clear, concise and accurate description of your services that includes your main keyword or search phrase once – that’s all you need.
  • Don’t misrepresent yourself. Always ensure the information you are providing is correct – Google will try and match the data submitted with other data about you on the web (citations) and to remain verified, these details need to match exactly.
  • Don’t use inappropriate photos. Google has clear guidelines on uploading photos – make sure you’re not violating copyright, infringing on trademarks, using illegal content or the usual internet no-nos including pornography and violence. See the full list here.

Any questions?

While it seems straight forward, it can be quite difficult to get a Google Places listing created that follows all the rules. There are plenty of companies out there that can help you with a Google Places listing, and we hear about a lot of businesses being charged a hefty fee to set one up – just remember that it is free to have a listing in Google Places so you should only be paying for their time and advice.

Feel free to call our friends at e-CBD (07 5531 3810) for advice on Google Places optimisation OR if you want them to set up a well-optimised Google Places for you it will only cost a very reasonable $150.

Gold Coast Whale Season Still Yielding Great Results

The Gold Coast’s whale season has already been one of the best the local industry has seen—but the season’s still got plenty to go, according to one operator.

Since the season’s beginning at the end of May, high numbers of whales and other marine life like dolphins and turtles have been spotted by whale watchers on the Gold Coast.

Whales in Paradise managing director Anthony Ardern says the season still has a number of highlights to go before the whales leave Queensland waters.

“The whales have made their migration north and are now on the way back to southern waters, meaning the numbers should still be high over the next few weeks,” Mr Ardern says.

“We’ve had excellent numbers so far this season—currently, we have mothers coming back with their calves and the males looking to begin the courting process.

“This courtship process means we’ll be seeing plenty more breaching, tail slapping, and all-round playfulness from the males as they come through our waters and try to find a mate.”

In addition to increased numbers of humpback, minke and southern right whales, the migratory period will also see another visitor in Gold Coast waters—killer whales.

Also known as the orca, these whales are part of the dolphin family, and are attracted to Queensland waters during this part of the season to hunt the younger whales as they migrate.

It’s expected that pods of up to 12 orcas will be able to be spotted in Gold Coast waters in the next month.

According to Mr Ardern, it’s this part of the season that in previous years has yielded some of the best sighting opportunities.

“The beginning of spring saw increased whale activity due to the start of the cross migration, and we’re still seeing excellent numbers at this point in the season,” Mr Ardern says.

“We tend to find that the whales are very inquisitive around this time of the year, often coming right up to the boat and putting on a show for onlookers.

“It’s also the time that you’re most likely to see a wide range of marine life; on a single tour, you can quite easily see humpbacks and killer whales, as well as dolphins and turtles.

“Now truly is one of the best times of the season for booking a tour.”

Whales in Paradise started in 2005 as the first whale watching operator on the Gold Coast. The company’s owner and managing director, Anthony Ardern, was 23 at the time—the youngest person in the world to set up a whale watching venture.

To book a tour, please visit http://www.whalesinparadise.com.au/ or call (07) 5538 2111.

Creative Industries and Currumbin Waters Industrial Estate

Connecting Southern Gold Coast Ltd (CSGC) is encouraging creative industry participants, businesses and community to join with it to explore the possibility of Currumbin Waters Industrial Estate becoming a hub for creative industries and artisans.

Mr Jim Wilson, General Manager of CSGC said, “Our aim is to engage with the community to see what new industries we can encourage to develop in this area. This would boost the local economy with potential new investment and job creation and new products and skills. This would have a real flow-on benefit to other businesses in the Southern Gold Coast region. We see creative industries as having real potential, as the creative industry sector in Qld contributes $3.4billion to the economy, annually.”

Given the current economic climate, Currumbin Waters Industrial Estate, like many others, has its share of empty buildings.

“CSGC is looking to locate innovators, designers, thinkers and leaders who want to identify opportunities that can be created by changes to historical thinking about Industrial Estates,” Mr Wilson said.

Mr Wilson went on to say, “We want to talk with people from divergent backgrounds who have a passion for cross-pollinating ideas for projects that can be given effect to in Currumbin Waters Industrial Estate. Einstein was reported to have said that ‘imagination is more important than knowledge’, and ‘imagination’ is what we are looking to tap into.”

“CSGC will support the initiative by calling a meeting of interested parties with the objective of identifying the types of projects that can employ artists and artisans, benefit business and employment, and fully engage the community. The key element to the success of this idea is community collaboration, vision and leadership.” Mr Wilson said.

Historically, there has been a strong creative industry in the Currumbin Waters Industrial Estate precinct. Much of the original fashion design and screen printing has moved away, for whatever reason and the plan is to engage with the wider community on ideas to see if this can be replaced, over time.

Mr Wilson went on to say “We have appointed Thrive, a Currumbin-based business with creative industries expertise, to assist us with arranging meetings and garnering ideas from the community. Anyone who is interested in expressing their ideas is welcome to do so by contacting Audra Hosking of Thrive on 0468815871 or at [email protected]“.

The Armor All Gold Coast 600 celebrates its 21st birthday this year – in a celebration that will include 28-high profile international drivers, the best local talent and a star-studded entertainment line-up.

In what is shaping up to another spectacular rock and race extravaganza that will deliver a major boost to the local tourism industry and economy, the event (to be held October 21-23) was launched today at an iconic Gold Coast location, the Palazzo Versace.

The launch included the announcement of talent both on and off the track – with seven new drivers and the much-anticipated entertainment line-up.

This year’s talent line up on the track will include 28-high-profile international drivers, teamed up with local V8 Supercar Champions, in one of the most unique formats in world motorsport.

A total of 18 drivers had been announced before today and the field has now been completed with the confirmation of no less than seven Formula 1 drivers – including current Hispania Racing Team F1 driver Tonio Liuzzi, who will drive alongside young Ford star Tony D’Alberto.

Joining Liuzzi on the streets of Surfers Paradise will be twice Gold Coast Indy winner Sebastian Bourdais, former Ferrari driver, Mika Salo, ex-Stewart GP ace Jan Magnussen, Austrian Christian Klien, journeyman Gianni Morbidelli and the versatile Stephane Sarrazin.

The seven having 350 Grand Prix starts between them and the total field will represent 12 different countries.

Off the track, a star-studded entertainment schedule has also been announced to continue the Armor All Gold Coast 600’s unique rock and race format.

The Friday night entertainment at the Broadwater Parklands will include Drapht, Potbelleez, Bag Raiders, Tonite Only and Illy.

Saturday night will include great Australian rock acts the Hoodoo Gurus, Eskimo Joe and Masters Apprentices before legendary Scottish band Simple Minds close the show.

Queensland Minister for Sport, Phil Reeves, said the event would showcase the best of the Gold Coast to 137 countries around the world as well as attract visitors to the region.

“The Queensland Government is supporting this event through Events Queensland because it will deliver a significant economic boost to the Gold Coast and provide vital support to the local tourism industry, businesses and jobs,” Mr Reeves said today.

“Nothing says Queensland is back in business more than putting on a successful event like this – and this event can be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

“To have 25 international drivers of the standard we have confirmed today is a credit to the organisers and will generate enormous interest in all corners of the world. And we still have three more surprises to come.

“The rock and race format was a hit last year and I think the on-track and off-track line-ups this year will ensure a fantastic 21st birthday celebration.”

V8 Supercar Chairman Tony Cochrane said that today’s announcement of the final field for this year’s event and the fantastic entertainment line-up was befitting a great 21st birthday celebration.

“The event has experienced a great transformation as we head into the second year of this international, rock and race format and the response says we are doing something right,’ said Cochrane.

“There is fantastic entertainment on and off the track and in these tough economic times the event not only provides an economic injection into the local economy, it gives locals the chance to relax and forget about the day-to-day grind for a few days.

“We also have some other plans in play on top of our regular television contracts which will see the Gold Coast beamed into more than 137 countries.

“We have kept ticket prices at attractive levels to ensure as many people as possible, including our ever-growing family market, can come and enjoy the event.

“We have to thank the Queensland Government and Paul Blair from Armor All for their wonderful support for this iconic event.”

The event will feature of Disney Pixar’s CARS Truck Tour 2011, one of the stars of the smash hit Cars2 movie.

The Disney Pixar’s CARS Truck Tour 2011 themed installation features a number of entertainment zones and themed activity stations, providing a whole new level of synergy between the CARS universe and the real world.

The event also includes an impressive support category list including Porsche Carrera Cup, V8 Utes, Touring Car Masters and Formula Ford.

Australian Cosmetics Brand Alexami Set To Launch In Belgium, Netherlands & Luxembourg

Australian mineral makeup company, Alexami Cosmetics, is set to further expand the distribution of its professional quality mineral makeup and cosmetic products. Currently stocked through spa and beauty salon outlets across Australia, Korea, and Slovenia, the brand will be officially launching in the European countries of Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg in October 2011.

Alexami founder Alenka Dirnbek has appointed a Belgium-based distributor who will be exclusively servicing all three countries – Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Belgium. “The official launch will happen on the Beauty and Wellness Expo in Belgium in October, where Alexami will have a booth. I’m hoping to attend and offer assistance with the official launch and expo presentation. However Alexami products will be available in Belgium prior the Expo, as our distributor has commenced advertising in professional beauty magazines and already has our first beauty salons onboard,” said Dirnbek.

Dirnbek is confident Alexami will thrive from its new Belgian distribution base. “Belgium is the centre of EU, they a part of Benelux and have good economy at the moment. It’s also a region that places great emphasis on quality natural products, so I see enormous potential for Alexami there.” According to Euromonitor, while regular beauty products sales in Belgium have been sluggish, a growing trend to success in recent years is more credible or naturally-positioned products, as scandals and alerts about the presence of unhealthy ingredients in BPC and home care products in Europe have been increasingly highlighted in the Belgian press and by local trade consumer associations.

In these new territories Alexami will be stocked through select beauty salons, spas, and dermatologists, and will be supported by a new Alexami Belguim website that is still under construction – www.alexami.be

Alexami’s ecological and socially-responsible ethics is central to the brand, so when appointing distributors Dirnbek ensures Alexami is represented by companies who understand the importance of natural products and non-toxic ingredients, and committed to growing the brand exclusively through premium outlets like beauty salons, day spas and skin clinics where customers receive better service and support. “The strategy in Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg will be same as in Australia, and we are proud that we managed to find a distributor who is eager to follow Alexami’s philosophy and selling strategies.”

The Belgian expansion will bring Alexami a step closer to its goal of presenting authentic Australian cosmetics worldwide. “Alexami’s vision is to expose overseas markets to Australia’s natural beauty through Alexami’s products and packaging. I will keep presenting Australia proudly in overseas markets and one of my biggest commitments is to keep developing and manufacturing products in Australia to support the local economy,” said Dirnbek.

While the European expansion is underway, the Alexami brand is continuing to grow its range of high quality natural products. “We keep growing and improving stuff, adding new products and investing in product development – we’re currently working closely with well respected scientists and chemists on some exciting new additions to the range that we hope to unveil soon.” Dirnbek said.
