The $1.2 billion Gold Coast light rail system will take its first public passengers on July 20, with a day of free travel marking the milestone event.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson confirmed the date while visiting the city yesterday, saying all the project’s stakeholders were now satisfied the launch could go ahead.

Construction of the 2018 Commonwealth Games Village will create an extra 1500 construction jobs on the Gold Coast.
Grocon’s application for development of the village has been approved, marking a major milestone for Gold Coast workers and their families.
Parklands will be redeveloped into a mixed-use precinct and integrated with the existing Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct.
“This approval for the Parklands redevelopment is an important next step in delivering a project worth an estimated $500 million to the Gold Coast,” says deputy premier Jeff Seeney.

Gold Coast Airport welcomed Jetstar’s first direct service between the Gold Coast and Mackay over the weekend.
The service, operated by an A320 aircraft, provides an additional 131,400 seats per year between the two destinations.
Gold Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer Paul Donovan said Gold Coast and Mackay airports have worked collaboratively for some time to bring the service to fruition. Continue reading →
Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman, Nigel Chamier OAM and Minister for the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey announced today that the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has approved the sport program and venues master plan for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™.

Arts and culture on the Gold Coast has received a major boost from the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).
Mayor Tom Tate said RADF provided opportunities for local artists and practitioners to take their creativity to the next level in a demonstration of the city’s cultural vision in action.
“We are seeing the emergence of a new era in arts and culture and the projects supported through RADF funding will add significantly to our city’s creative vibrancy,” Cr Tate said.
“Through initiatives and partnerships such as this we are supporting our local artists and cultural practitioners to be ambitious and bold in their creative endeavours.”
Arts Minister Ian Walker said the Regional Arts Development Fund supported more than 3000 arts and cultural projects each year.
“In 2013–14, the Queensland Government will provide $2.037 million, with another $1.49 million coming from 55 Queensland councils,” Mr Walker said. Continue reading →

A Gold Coast primary school student and singer, songwriter and actress Jessica Mauboy will take to the world stage at the official Flag Handover Ceremony during the closing ceremony of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Commonwealth Games Minister Jann Stuckey said the Glasgow 2014 Closing Ceremony, broadcast to more than one billion people, was a fantastic opportunity to give a taste of what our great state would offer when the Gold Coast hosts the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
“Jessica is a passionate, energetic and wonderfully talented Australian who is as excited about the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™ as I am,” Ms Stuckey said.
