Gold Coast China Town Update

chinatown updateChinatown is forging ahead – streetscape construction commenced in November and the project’s expected completion is in mid 2014, in time for the light rail opening.

Gold Coast Chinatown is part of the broader plan to revitalise Southport as the Gold Coast CBD.

The City of Gold Coast is continuing to work with our Asian sister cities to design and donate the three Paifang, the symbolic gateways to the precinct whose design will be inspired by Gold Coast’s unique character.

This exciting new dining and retail destination will host a calendar of events celebrating significant cultural occasions and a regular street market. The city is working with property owners and businesses to attract new business and help existing business to respond to changing retail needs and cultural considerations.

Some of the project highlights to date include:

  • almost $6 million committed to the project
  • City of Gold Coast and Energex agreement (50/50) to underground the powerlines
  • streetscape design to incorporate future use for events and on street dinning
  • preparation of decorative lighting and street furniture concepts

With the thousands of international tourists coming to the city every year, Gold Coast Chinatown will bring a sense of home and community, and strengthen it as a place to do business, be entertained, to live and be educated.
