Emergency doctors are appealing to Gold Coast residents to assist the patient move to Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) this weekend by seeking alternative care options throughout the move period.
Emergency Physician Dr Michael Aitken said that while the emergency department will be open at the new facility, locals are encouraged to seek appropriate care options over the two-day move.
“We are seeking the assistance of the community to ensure a safe and smooth move as staff settle into the new hospital,” Dr Aitken said.
“Please think about the type of care you need before you think about coming to the new hospital,” he said. “If you require emergency care – which means that your life is dependent on being seen quickly by a qualified clinician – call 000 immediately. For those who require non-urgent care, there are a number of alternative care options available.”
Locals are encouraged to call 13 HEALTH for advice over the phone, visit a local GP or call into a 24 hour medical clinic. Robina Hospital’s emergency department is also an option for more critical cases.
“We thank the Gold Coast and surrounding communities for their patience as we relocate the old to the new,” Dr Aitken said. “It is such an exciting time for the Gold Coast with the opening of this great new facility,” he said.
At 8 am on Saturday 28 September, the new facility will open its doors to emergency patients. The Gold Coast Hospital emergency department will close at the same time.
Gold Coast Hospital’s most critical patients will continue to be relocated throughout the same day as the new hospital opens.
Once all patients have been moved, the old Gold Coast Hospital will close its doors for the last time.
