Queensland Promotes Tourism & Construction Investment in China

Representatives of Queensland business and industry sectors will accompany a government-led investment mission visiting China later this month.

Leading a group of Queensland companies and council representatives, Minister for Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts Ian Walker said the mission would focus on promoting some of the State’s best opportunities in the tourism and construction sectors.

“The delegation will promote a range of investment opportunities from across the State and I am delighted the Treasurer and Minister for Trade Tim Nicholls invited me to lead this important group,” Mr Walker said.

“The mission includes 41 delegates representing 26 Queensland companies, as well as mayors and councillors from the Sunshine Coast, Logan, Cairns and the Gold Coast.”

Last year Chinese visitation to Queensland increased by 27 per cent to 261,000 visitors, with an estimated expenditure $468 million.

Mr Walker said the mission would capitalise on China’s growing interest in Queensland by investigating how the Newman Government can continue to assist Queensland industries doing business with China.

“The tourism and construction industries are two of Queensland’s four economic pillars, and investment in these sectors is vital to our state’s future prosperity,” he said.

“Queensland is a great state, with great opportunities, and this mission will pave the way for the next wave of investment projects into Queensland.”

The delegation was organised by the government’s global agency Trade and Investment Queensland.

Mr Walker will visit China from 15-19 April, before heading to the United States to represent Queensland’s scientific community at the 2013 BIO International Convention being held in Chicago.
