NBA Coach Sees Gold Coast’s Sporting Potential

Renowned NBA coach Mike Dunlap is visiting the Gold Coast this week to see the city’s potential as a sporting destination.

Mr Dunlap, who coached the Michael Jordan-owned Charlotte Bobcats team, will visit The Southport School (TSS) where he will meet with Basketball Director Dave Claxton and offer some guest coaching; and meet with City of Gold Coast representatives.

Mayor Tom Tate said Mr Dunlap’s visit was a great opportunity to show what the 2018 Commonwealth Games would deliver for the city.

“Basketball is one of the sports for 2018 Commonwealth Games, and with more than $170 million in new and upgraded sporting facilities being delivered in time for the event, it means we’ll have new world class venues that can accommodate elite basketball,” he said.

“Attracting elite and high performance training camps before and after the Commonwealth Games is a key part of the City’s Economic Development Strategy and one of our GC2018 legacy objectives.

“With our world-class facilities, attractions and lifestyle, the Gold Coast will be the perfect training camp destination for the NBA.”

TSS’s Dave Claxton said he was delighted to be showing Mr Dunlap around the city to show him the potential of the Gold Coast as a major international sporting location.

“It’s been a long while since Mike has visited the Gold Coast so this is an excellent opportunity to see everything our city has to offer,” he said.
