The first flag to recognise the Gold Coast as the official host city for the 2018 Commonwealth Games has been raised at the Council Chambers at Evandale.
Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) President His Royal Highness Prince Imran and former Chief Executive Officer and life member Mike Hooper joined Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate to raise the flag.
Mayor Tom Tate said the flag recognised the host city handover from Glasgow to the Gold Coast.
“At the end of Glasgow 2014, the Gold Coast became the official host city of the Commonwealth Games and this flag recognises this major milestone,” said Cr Tate.
“The flag, which bears the CGF’s emblem, reflects the Gold Coast’s pride as custodian of the Commonwealth Games brand for the next three and a half years.
“Raising the flag also sends a message that we will be upholding the CGF’s core values of equality, destiny and humanity in our Games. Glasgow organisers this week have attributed the success of their event to ensuring all their planning aligned with these core values and the GC2018 partnership has been doing likewise.
“This is the first of a number of similar flags that will be raised at other civic locations across the Gold Coast.”
Mayor Tate also said the recent debrief from Glasgow Games organisers was a great opportunity to hear what worked well for them.
“Our Commonwealth Games preparations are well on track and we are confident we are where we need to be at this point in the journey.”
